I wonder if anyone can recall this service?

I am from Lancaster and in 1969 I became a student in Leeds. Whilst I usually made visits home by train, I can vaguely recall one fine, probably early summer, evening in 1970 using the X88. Now I had thought I had travelled over on a West Yorkshire Bristol coach (probably an MW) but the journey was made in the early evening and would have arrived in Lancaster around about 8-9 p.m. This would seem a late arrival for a driver to make a return journey to Leeds. However, on reading an old Ian Allan BBF 16, it describes the X88 as being "joint with West Yorkshire Road Car", so perhaps after all these years my memory is playing tricks and it was actually a Ribble vehicle I travelled on. I certainly recall a short break at a pub called the Cross Streets in Austwick, on the A65.

What I was wondering, is how long after 1970 did this service continue?

Certainly after bus deregulation, Lancaster City Transport started a service to Leeds (200, I think) which was later extended to Doncaster. After LCT sold out to Stagecoach, the service continued for a while - perhaps curtailed to Leeds again - and I reckon I last saw it in about 1994.

If any one has any recollections about the X88 in particular, I would be interested to hear them.

Amongst the facilities offered to passengers at Skelhorne Street Bus Station in Liverpool was a public bar, known in later years as Telfords Bar. To my recollection it was a shabby, smoke-filled dive and amongst the last places you would go for a drink in Liverpool. However, it is currently the subject of debate amongst local bus enthusiasts. Does anyone know the original name of this establishment? I have a feeling that it was known as The Ribble Bar, but so far no one has found any photos that show such a sign.

Hi

This is my first post on your Forum. I am researching Alfred Wainwright's first visit to the Lake District in 1930. I know that he journeyed to Windermere from Blackburn on Saturday 7th June 1930.

My questions are:
1. Would he have travelled on a Ribble bus?

2. Does anyone know whether timetables still exist from the time? If so, where can this information be found?

3. Do any photographs exist of the kind of bus he may have used?

I realise that this is a very obscure request but hope that somebody can give me any information about this bus journey.

Thanks
1455 is a Burlingham bodied Leyland Titan PD2/12 which was new to Ribble in July, 1956 and withdrawn
in November 1971. She entered preservation in 1996 and became part of the RVPT collection in 1999.

She passed to the Lancastrian Transport Trust in 2003 but failed to enter their restoration programme.
LTT recently decided that 1455 did not fit their collection criteria and RVPT member Gerard Butler agreed

Blackpool Transport's last Atlantean B364UBV was stood down from service at the end of November. This is 50 years since Ribble's first Atlanteans entered service (Nov 59 I believe). I cannot find the REC 1960s allocation book to confirm where the first lot went, but even if they weren't based at Blackpool chances are they would have run into the town from Preston or Lancaster. I am trying to contend that 364's demise has ended 50 years of Atlantean operation in the town. Can anyone confirm that Ribble's 1959 buses appeared in Blackpool when new?

Incidentally Fishwicks 23 GRN895W was on the 115 college trip last week, despite being semi retired. Perhaps this now may take the title as the last Atlantean in service with its original owner.

Thanks

Some of you will be familiar with the recent Capital Transport publication "The Colours of Greater Manchester", a photographic survey of the bus fleets that operated in that area, illustrating in colour the wide variety of vehicles and liveries that existed before 1970. Other volumes are now in preparation, covering different areas of Britain.

Two of my friends are in the early stages of evaluating material for possible inclusion in the provisionally titled "Colours around Merseyside". If you have, or know of anyone else who has colour slides of buses and coaches in the area enclosed by Southport, Ormskirk, St. Helens, Warrington and Chester, they would be interested in hearing from you. Images must be well lit, sharply focussed, taken no later than the end of 1969 and preferably some years before that. Slides from the 1950s are understandably rare but do exist and there is a particular need to find images of rarer types such as members of small batches or utility bodied buses The fleets to be covered are the companies Ribble, Crosville, Lancashire United; the municipals Birkenhead, Chester, Liverpool, St. Helens, Southport, Wallasey, Warrington, Widnes; other express service/coach operators.

If you think that you may have suitable material and would like to offer it for consideration, contact me off-forum at jonathan.cadwallader@googlemail.com

Hi,
What is the story behind bus grants - and in particular, why did it change to having the entry in front of the front wheels, as oppose to behind? Thank you

Living in the Bolton area in the late 60's, early 70's, I developed a keen intrest in the Ribble express services into the town, particularly the X65 Paignton ans the X30/X40 Glasgow/Lake District services. As a new driver at that time I had as much intrest in the drivers as the vehicles. Having read David Wayman's excellent book 'Weekend Bus Driver' I would like to be able to put faces to some of the drivers he mentioned.I would be interested to hear if anyone still remembers the staff from that era. One particularly charismatic driver I remember from a glorious drive to Devon on the X65 was a Jimmy Edwards look-alike, complete with handlebar moustache! Can anybody shed any light on these happily remembered times for me?

A seller in Kent is offering what they believe to be a Ribble Blackpool Depot blind from the 1970s on eBay. I'm sure that it isn't. The font and upper case characters and the stated width lead me to believe that it's actually a coach blind, possibly Abbotts, or perhaps from a Lytham/Fylde or Blackpool vehicle. Anyone know for certain?
A small poser for anyone who is interested and can answer them.
1) Ribble bought two coaches non standard, second hand, they were used for excursions, they were given a nickname, probably only know locally, can you give this nickname?
2) The same two coaches had another unique one off applied, any ideas what this was?
3) They spent most of their time at one depot, which?
4) From where were they bought?

I'll leave this with you all and will post the answers at a later date unless someone manages to give them, I tend to look on the forum most days so will see the answers given and will reply accordingly.
