Hello,
Of all of you who watched 'On the Buses', who can fail to remember (in one of the films), the scene where Stan tries to retrieve Jacks (his conductor) PSV badge, after the latters layover! Resulting in a quite hilarious scene.
My questions are this -
What was the purpose of them? Not identity, because when I had a complaint against a conductor, I took his number and gave it to the then ECOC, only to be told they couldn't use it but needed a ticket to do the job.
What happened to them, and why were they consigned to the history books? Have I answered this myself?

Does anyone know at what point Bristol Commercial Vehicles/British Leyland stopped offering the Leyland O.600 engine as an option in Bristol REs? The O.680 was available from, I believe, 1967, Bristol Omnibus having the first. In a sales brochure dated September 1970 it is the only alternative listed to the Gardner 6HLX. However, I know that the O.600 was specified by some operators after the O.680 had become an option.
After several visits by Freda Moss and the members of the Leyland Museum the display was opened to the public on Wednesday 4th April and will last until Saturday 30th June.

As part of the display is a series of continously running DVDs from the Leyland Museum and a copy of the 2007 "Ribble, A Brief Encounter". These DVDs are rotated daily by the shop staff at Carnforth Station. Also available to the public for the first time is the new 2012 Trust Membership leaflet.

The Brief Encounter Tea Rooms, the shop and the Bateman Gallery display will be open on Sunday 6th May and there will be directions from Hawes Hill bus terminus to the station platform. This is the day of the R.V.P.T. Morecambe Bay Running Day, when vehicles will operate every 20 minutes frrom Heysham Village via Morecambe Promanade to Carnforth Station, (Hawes Hill).

There are several other permanent displays relating to the film "Brief Encounter" and railways around Carnforth, as well as the mandatory visit to the Tea Rooms. The food is excellent particulally the bacon butties and the scones!

7000 'nastys' were built - quite easy when you kill off the competition! E.G. Bristol RE's, a far superior vehicle (may I be forgiven!!). With regard to Standerwick - suggest you look at an early Ian Allan fleet list c.1962 to see where Ribble/ Standerwick went. With regard to liveries, who can't remember the dreadful ghostly white liveries of the Bristol express coaches (VRLL's).

“In 1984 Ribble purchased one of the ex Devon Sea Dogs”
JKS: Why, do we think, that it was only in 1984 that Ribble did o/toppers?

James posed a very interesting question in the midst of a thread about a Mercedes minibus. This really warrants a new thread in itself, so here goes.

I don't pretend to know the answer to his query, but would speculate that a member of the management noticed what was happening elsewhere and thought, we could do that.
If you think back to the early 1970s, open top buses were still very much a seaside town speciality. There were small fleets operating in Southport, Southend, Paignton, and several other resorts with companies such as Crosville and Southdown using examples on lengthier coastal routes. It was the emergence of "City Break" holidays that spawned the urban open topper. In the days before Routemasters could be spared for de-roofing, Obsolete Fleet ran a number of ex-Midland Red D9s on o/t form in London, whilst in Stratford-upon-Avon, Guide Friday began their operation before spreading far and wide. The arrival of the latter in other towns eventually stimulated a response from some municipal and NBC operators, leading to bus wars on the streets, particularly notable in Bath and Edinburgh.

Before de-regulation Ribble would have been unlikely to be granted licences to run open top services in Southport or Morecambe when such facilities were already provided. I doubt that it would ever have occurred to the company that running an open top service anywhere other than in a seaside resort would be viable, prior to Guide Friday showing the way elsewhere.

There are a number of o/t services running in National Parks these days, but it is a sign of the times when a few miles away from me there is just one open top bus running spasmodically in Southport in the summer months, whilst three different operators are competing all year round for the tourist market in Liverpool.

So, does anyone know if Ribble ever harboured ideas about running open top services for tourists before 1984? View the sights of Barrow, Blackburn and Bootle from a breezy top deck?

Further to my last mailing on the Mercedes minibus which ended up as Stagecoach 42672, and extra information kindly supplied by Geoff. I did buy that particular model on Ebay and it is now in my Ribble cabinet.

(Ebay buying is compulsive and can easily become addictive, and I mean that! It's alright of course if you have a spare shilling or two, but be warned.)

Anyhow, back to the subject. The more I delve into it, the wider I seem to be stretching what does, and could have, constituted being Ribble.

And here's a discussion point to add to when our hobby ends. Was it 1986 or is it still spiritually still alive? It's certainly alive in the model fraternity and this is where this latest model comes in. As you see, it's an ex-Southdown (therefore a Ribble cousin!) VRT purchased by Cumberland in 1990. It's generally in its former livery and is advertising "Travel by bus & boat between Boness, Windermere & Ambleside - Circular Bus & Boat Tour". Questions this time are: did Ribble ever have open top deckers up there and would anyone agree that bus operations in that area are still 'spiritually' Ribble?

Someone in my neck of the woods has posted a very short segment of film from his family archive which shows Ribble PD2 1424. (HCK 484.) Sadly, there is no sound but it's still well worth a look.

The bus is seen working on route 58 near to its outer terminus in Litherland . This was a joint service with MPTE but to my recollection only Ribble vehicles worked the service, I think from Aintree Depot. If it was filmed in 1972 then this must have been one of the last PD2s in service.

Announced yesterday, to be released in the Spring, is a 6-bay Marshall bus, using the same casting as the DP version released last year.

Doing a bit more research I have established that the Corgi model 97835 was based on a Willowbrook body. It was never a pretty model as shown here below left, The EFE DP version is below right.
Could someone elaborate on the differences between them?
